The film went into development for the first time in March 2016 and was described as a passion project for Steven Spielberg, who wanted to get involved in a horror movie again.  The adaptation of the film went through two production phases: first as Haunted with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo as director, then changed its name to The Turning with Floria Sigismondi.
The main production began in Ireland on February 14, 2018. Filming began with the cast and crew behind the strict security at Killruddery House in County Wicklow with Steven Spielberg present in Ireland to oversee the filming and production. The filming of Wolfhard and Prince concluded on March 27, 2018. The main photography of the film was completed on April 6, 2018.
